When octogenarian French New Wave legend Agnès Varda and 30-something photograffeur JR embark together on a journey across France, expect more than the usual road trip. As they travel through the country, they discover and profile characters they meet in small villages, on the docks and at the local factories. As the duo starts posting giant portraits of the people (and goats) they meet along the way — creating urban and rural open-air installations — they develop a heart-warming and complicit friendship. The complicity between the two artists, joyful, teasing, full of humour, is passed on to the viewer in this moving and poetic film — as much about the process of making art as about the magic that is art. As the story progresses, you will only wish for this journey to run longer, for wheelchair races through the Louvre to go faster and for new friendships to blossom.
